From the Presqu’île Malraux to the Esplanade district

If you visit the Malraux peninsula, you’ll find the Citadelle, an eleven-hectare park built on the site of the former military fortress designed by Vauban, just a few meters away on the left bank. The ancient remains, shady paths and waterways are dotted with playgrounds and outdoor sports facilities accessible to all.

Not far from there, in the heart of the Esplanade district, the city’s botanical garden can be found among the university buildings. Established in 1619, the garden is home to over 6,000 plant species from all over the world, cultivated in the open air or in greenhouses. Most of them can be admired free of charge during opening hours.

In the heart of the European Quarter

Passing through the European Quarter? Located right next to the parliament building, the Orangerie is the city’s oldest park and is considered Strasbourg’s green heart. Through its many flower-lined avenues, you’ll discover a lake, a waterfall and the Palais Joséphine, which hosts various temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the tree tops during your visit: the park is renowned as a refuge for storks, Alsace’s emblematic bird. There are plenty of play areas and a small zoo for the little ones to enjoy.

From France to Germany

Finally, a visit to the Jardin des Deux Rives will take you to Germany, where you can cross the footbridge over the Rhine and discover the nearby town of Kehl. A true cross-border space, the garden also hosts concerts and events in fine weather.
